Justin Jefferson reportedly turned down a $30 million contract from the Vikings earlier.

The NFL free agency is in full swing. Teams are doing whatever they can to strengthen their roster. In that trend, the Kansas City Chiefs have restructured the contract of their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to save some salary cap space. That move led to many speculations, including the Chiefs potentially trading for the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Mahomes has once again restructured his contract, which will save $21.6 million worth of salary cap space. This move reportedly brings the Chiefs $15 million under the cap space, which they could use for signing other players.

Before the restructure, Mahomes was set to count $58 million against the Chiefs cap space. Now, he will cost a lot less. This move comes after they placed their star cornerback, L’Jarius Sneed, under the franchise tag. Sneed is scheduled to count nearly $20 million against their salary cap and they had to address it by restructuring Mahomes’ contract.

Furthermore, with plenty more needs to address, the Chiefs would be happy to save around $15 million in cap space just ahead of NFL free agency. One of their needs is a true number 1 wide receiver. There aren’t many star wideouts available in the free agency market, but many believe the Chiefs would end up trading for a star player.

Some of the names, including the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins are being linked to the Kansas City-based football team. Furthermore, some also believe the Chiefs could make a move at the Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson. The Minnesota pass catcher is currently set to play for the Vikings in 2024 under the 5th-year option, which would cost them $19.7 million.

However, the trade rumors come after reports revealed Jefferson rejected a $30 million per year contract from the Vikings. Furthermore, since Kirk Cousins is now out of Minnesota, many expect Jefferson to join a team with a proven quarterback. There’s currently no better QB in the league than Mahomes.

The Chiefs are currently looking to become the first team in the NFL’s history to three-peat (three straight championships). For that, they would have to address a lot of shortcomings in this off-season.
