Though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers couldn’t pass the divisional round in the playoffs this season, it was indeed a notable season for them. The credit for that goes to quarterback Baker Mayfield, whom the franchise traded right before the 2023 regular season.

Not only did he lead the franchise to the 9-8 record but also posted a heroic outing against the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round to take Bucs to the divisional round. He threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns, leading to a dominating 32-9 wild-card playoff win.

Given that, a contract extension was foreseen. Shortly after the divisional round, the NFL Network reported that both Mayfield and the Buccaneers have a mutual interest in extending his one-year contract and bringing him back for the 2024 season.

Recently, Dov Kleiman shared insight from Tony Pauline, revealing that “Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield is expected to make ‘at least’ $40 million per season on a new deal,” on X (formerly Twitter).

Mayfield was drafted as the No. 1 pick of the 2018 draft which landed him at Cleveland Browns. After four overwhelming years with them, he joined the Carolina Panthers and then the Los Angeles Rams but couldn’t make it to establish his name. It was when the QB finally landed in Tampa Bay, that his true potential as the No. 1 draft pick could be fulfilled.

He logged 4,000 passing yards for the first time in his NFL career in the regular season along with a career-high 28 touchdowns with the Bucs.

Fans react to Baker Mayfield’s contract extension

Upon hearing his contract extension news that would earn him $40 million per season, fans are totally blown away. Many fans expressed their support for the quarterback as they said he deserved such contract deals as he led the team to the playoffs.
