ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that Oregon’s Bo Nix could be a possible back up option for the Cowboys.

Dak Prescott is entering his final season with the Dallas Cowboys. As things stand, it could also be the 30-year-old’s penultimate campaign in Jerry Land.
Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken first broke the news that Cowboys veteran owner Jerry Jones is quite happy to let Prescott see off his contract at Arlington. ESPN’s Adam Schefter later backed up this claim during a recent segment of NFL Live.
Jones previously stated that they were going ‘all in’ at the start of the free agency, which has been anything but successful. According to ESPN analyst Mina Kimes, Jones’ announcement made little sense, and on the surface, it feels like he’s sabotaging Prescott’s chances of a match-winning 2024 campaign.
On the other hand, there’s merit to not tying down the three-time Pro Bowler to a possible $60 million-a-year deal. All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons and Cowboys single-season reception and receiving yards record holder CeeDee Lamb are all out of contract after this season.
So either make Prescott the highest earner in the league or keep multiple Pro Bowl-caliber players and draft a new quarterback. This is where the Cowboys can play their hands, Schefter argues. According to him, the Dallas Cowboys are a ‘sleeper team’ that may select a quarterback from the QB-heavy lineup in the NFL Draft.
With these potential shifts in strategy, there’s keen interest in how the Cowboys spread odds might adjust, particularly from bettors watching how draft picks and contract decisions shape the team’s future”
Cowboys may select Bo Nix as Dak Prescott’s successor
In the last few seasons, the Cowboys did not address the aging offensive line. After the departure of Tyron Smith and a few others to follow suit after this year, Jones’ primary target would be to draft a guard or a left tackle. Additionally, they have the running back core of Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn, who are not viewed as starting material.

So they will either go for an O-lineman or a running back as their first pick in the draft. Now, as for their second pick, they might surprise everyone and select a quarterback. Last week, Colin Cowherd revealed that ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. believes both Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. are second-round prospects.
Here are all the Cowboys picks from the 2024 NFL Draft:
Round 1, pick 24.
Round 2, pick 56.
Round 3, pick 87.
Round 4, Pick 105.
Round 4, pick 110.
Round 5, pick 174.
Schefter claimed that the chances of the Cowboys using their pick No. 56 on quarterback are much higher than many perceive. Nix, according to him, fits the bill. Moreover, both current backups, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance, only have one year left on their contract.
Starting for the Oregon Ducks, Nix has the basics of the West Coast offense, which Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy is famous for employing in his tactics. However, there’s also a catch. Like Dak Prescott, McCarthy is also in the last year of his contract, and reports suggest that if he fails to deliver, he may be replaced with Bill Belichick.
Keeping that in mind, Jerry Jones has to play his cards very carefully. The Cowboys could look very different in 2025.
