The San Francisco 49ers have already started playing mind games before Super Bowl LVIII in Vegas. On Thursday night, the media asked the 49ers owner, Jed York, whether anything stood out to him from the last time these two met.

The encounter the reporters were talking about was the 2020 Super Bowl LIV. During the entire game, the officials only gave one offensive holding call against the Chiefs. It was on wide receiver Byron Pringle during a kickoff return.

Kyle Shanahan‘s team was leading 20-10 with 7 minutes left to go in the game. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a 44-yard pass to Tyreek Hill from 3rd and 5 to keep the drive going. They scored 21 points in the remaining time to win the game 31-20.

While Kansas celebrated becoming world champions, there was a massive online debate surrounding Chiefs offensive tackle Eric Fisher. Allegedly, Fisher held 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa during the game-winning drive. Jed York appeared to have a sharp memory that he brought the play up yesterday.

I remember Nick Bosa getting held on third-and-long.

York told the reporters

Bosa had a similar take as Jed York

Although there’s hardly any player left in the Chiefs offensive line from the last time these two sides met, there are indications that the game in Vegas could witness a few holding calls. Especially when players like tackles Donovan Smith and Jawaan Taylor are on the starting roster.

Bosa was asked about his thoughts on how he sees the two players. He replied,

They hold a lot.

The All-Pro pass rusher’s claims aren’t farfetched. Well, that’s because the Chiefs have been called for offensive holding the most times in the league this season. The officials penalized them 30 times, with six additional flags declined in 20 games.

On the other hand, the 49ers are smacked down in the middle of the pile when it comes to conceding holding calls. They are 19th, tied with the Denver Broncos, who have played two fewer games, with 17 offensive holding calls.

Chiefs right tackle Taylor leads the league with 20 penalties, including eight offensive holding calls. His partner on the left side has four offensive holding calls against him. They aren’t alone; left guard Trey Smith has eight, while center Creed Humphrey has received four such penalties.
