Nicki Minaj returns to her playful side for the latest music video for the breakout hit ‘Barbie Dreams’ off her record Queen, featuring a host of puppets.

Directed by master of the surrealistic music video Hype Williams, the video reimagines all of today’s top rappers that Minaj lists off in the song as hilarious look alike puppets.

An homage track to Notorious BIG’s “Just Playing (Dreams)’, the Queens rapper flips the script and rattles off various reasons why she wouldn’t sleep with any of top MCs. Clearly tongue-in-cheek, some took it better than others, but this colourful video further drives home the song’s intention.

After the track ruffled some feathers, Minaj clarified that ‘Barbie Dreams’ wasn’t a diss track, explaining that it was all in good fun.

“I said things about people who I know can take a joke and who I know can’t be emotional with it,” the rapper said on Beats1 radio following the release of Queen.

Props to, well, the prop designer for making these puppet versions startling realistic, from the puppet version of Lil Wayne with his sports car, to Tekashi 6ix9ine’s neon teeth and even getting DJ Khaled’s facial hair just right.

As for the video’s original concept, Minaj shared its origin on Twitter:

“The puppets were all Hype’s idea. He had someone make them. We were gonna have way more, but it would’ve taken too long,” Minaj wrote.

Alongside puppet versions of other rappers, Minaj herself cycles through several eye-popping costume changes (and hair colours) from a neon green PVC jacket to a fuzzy yellow jacket that would make Big Bird jealous.

Minaj also took to her show Queen radio to discuss the previous week’s gossip and brought on guest Funkmaster Flex. Minaj is a natural at radio and has proven to be Apple Music’s newest shock jock.
