They are founders of the groundbreaking NWSL franchise

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes‘ legacy in the KC community goes far beyond the Kansas City Chiefs. As co-founders of the Kansas City Current pro soccer team, the Mahomeses have helped plan and finance the world’s first stadium built for a women’s sports team. Along with it comes a new state-of-the-art locker room, revealed to the Current players for the first time in a video shared by Patrick Mahomes on social media.

Forward Michelle Cooper was the first one in, and could not contain her excitement. The players celebrated having a comfortable space to call their own, in a sport of women’s soccer often made to share men’s facilities or occupy those meant for non-professional teams. Some screamed, some danced, and others like 2023 NWSL Best XI honoree Debinha took out their phones to record the historic moment.

The Chiefs quarterback shared the video with his 6.8 million Instagram followers, building hype for the Current’s home opener at its brand new CPKC Stadium against 2022 NWSL Champions Portland Thorns. The groundbreaking $117 million stadium opens for its first game this Saturday, March 16.

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes invest in women’s sports

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes joined the ownership group with Chris and Angie Long in 2022. A former pro herself, Brittany brought her lifelong passion for soccer to the board room, while Patrick became the first active NFL player to have equity in an NWSL team.

The new locker room is part of an $18 million training facility, the first built specifically for a women’s professional sports team. It was privately funded, meaning the Mahomeses likely footed at least some of the bill.

According to the team website, the layout is focused on all aspects of player health including training (elite weight, cardio and recovery assets) and nutritional (high performance chef, locally-sourced menus). In addition, the design is also focused on fostering player community and promoting physical and mental wellness.
