The controversial offside call on Kadarius Toney has left Andy Reid baffled. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach said the decision was ’embarrassing.’

With just under 2 minutes left on the clock on second and 10, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw the ball to tight end Travis Kelce. With several Buffalo Bills players converging on his possession, Kelce made a big brain play and handed the ball over to Toney. The fourth-year wide receiver had an open field ahead of him and scored the easiest touchdown of his NFL career.

However, the celebrations were cut short when the players noticed a yellow flag on the ground. The officials pulled back the play and announced that they were chalking off the TD because Toney was offside on the line of scrimmage. With that ruling, the Chiefs’ chances of a late come-from-behind victory were snatched away from under their noses.

Mahomes could be seen visibly frustrated with the decision. The 28-year-old smashed his helmet on the ground to imply that he did not agree with the referee. Andy Reid had this to say about the offside after the game:

Usually I get a warning before something like that happens. It's a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place. I’ve been in the league for a long time. I haven't had one like that.

Offensive offenses are rare, as Mahomes said in his interview that he has never encountered one in his seven years of playing in the NFL. Nevertheless, it’s part of the game, and the officials were correct in their assessment.

As per referee Carl Cheffers, down judge Mike Carr saw Toney lined up offside.

Ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up. No warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offside that they're actually blocking our view of the ball. We would give them a warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.

As for Toney, he was tipped to be the #1 receiver for Andy Reid’s team. However, the 24-year-old is far from it, with just 25 receptions for 164 yards and 1 touchdown. He is yet to have a 50-yard game in 2023. The Chiefs’ next game is at Foxborough against the New England Patriots.
