Stephen Jones took a page out of Austin Rivers‘ playbook. The Dallas Cowboys vice president, instead of using a metaphor from the gridiron to describe the current status of the Cowboys and Dak Prescott, opted to pluck out one from basketball.

The Cowboys fanbase has grown restless after owner Jerry Jones failed to live up to his ‘all-in’ promise, despite making smart moves in the recent draft. They were looking for an explanation from the management, and they finally got one when Stephen Jones dropped by to chat with SiriusXM‘s Adam Schein.

However, the statement was more or less an old wine in a new bottle. He only presented the Cowboys’ previous standpoint that Dak Prescott would lead the team to a Super Bowl victory.

Absolutely. I totally think Dak can lead us to a championship. He does everything the right way.

Stephen Jones said

Well, if that’s the case, then why hasn’t the Cowboys front office finalized a contract extension with Prescott? Jones claimed that it was their priority, even though ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that there hadn’t been any concrete talks between the two parties.

Jones doesn’t believe in listening to outside noise. He backed Prescott as a ‘leader of the football team’ who ‘keeps everybody motivated in the offseason.’ Despite the praise, the Cowboys have failed to make any impression in the playoffs, even though they won 12 games in three back-to-back seasons.

Sometimes that old oblong football doesn’t bounce your way. [However], you know, we’re hanging around the rim. We’ve just gotta go up there and grab it.

The Cowboys Nations have been hanging around the ‘rim’ since 1996—the last time their team reached a championship game.

Dak Prescott’s contract is also hanging near the rim

FOX Sports analyst Colin Cowherd asserted in a segment of The Herd that the Cowboys should move on from Dak Prescott after this season. Next year, they should draft Colorado’s and former Cowboys CB Deion Sanders‘ son, Shedeur Sanders.

Cowherd had also predicted that the Cowboys would take a shot at drafting a QB this year in the latter rounds. Citing Mel Kiper Jr.‘s draft analysis, he suggested that either Oregon’s Bo Nix or Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. would be a good fit. However, both were selected during the first round, and the Cowboys lost an opportunity.

While many Cowboys fans would want to see the back of Prescott, including his brother, Arlington has to stick with the 30-year-old for the time being. All he needs is a repeat of 4,500 passing yards and an NFL-best 36 touchdowns on a career-best 69.5 completion from the 2023 regular season and a better postseason to convince Jones to make him the highest-paid quarterback in the league.
