Dak Prescott has a massive year ahead of him. He is coming to the end of his Dallas Cowboys contract after the 2024 season. Yet there’s no sign that owner Jerry Jones will extend the quarterback’s stay in Arlington.

In fact, sources close to Jones have claimed that he has no issue with Prescott playing out his contract. They have yet to start any form of negotiation, even though the 30-year-old claimed he and Jones had a nice conversation last month.

On Friday, Prescott accompanied Cowboys legend and three-time Super Bowl winner Troy Aikman to the Children’s Cancer Fund’s “A Knight to Remember” gala. After the event concluded, the media swarmed the two and asked several questions.

One of the journalists asked Prescott about his contract situation. The three-time Pro Bowler revealed that he doesn’t “necessarily” want to be the highest-paid player in the NFL.

[No], I'm not trying to be the highest paid necessarily. We'll wait until the negotiations begin and obviously want to put this team in the best situation.

Can Dak Prescott become the highest-paid player in the NFL?

Every time a franchisor pays, it’s quarterback; they reset the market. It began with the Philadelphia Eagles paying Jalen Hurts $255 million for five years.

Then the Baltimore Ravens increased the heat with five years and $260 million for Lamar Jackson. It continued with the Los Angeles Chargers paying Justin Herbert $262 million for five years, and currently, the best-paid player in the league is Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow with five years and $275 million.

Dak Prescott is set to count $55.4 million against the salary cap in 2024. Moreover, the Cowboys can’t franchise tag him or have the option of a trade. To put it into terms, Prescott is projected to sign a contract in the region of $60 million a year. There is hardly any other team left with the capital to pay him that much besides the Cowboys.

On top of that, the Cowboys need to start planning on renewing the contracts of both CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons. Two players, unlike Prescott, will not be available for voluntary training sessions.

Despite the uncertainty about his future in Dallas, Prescott doesn’t fear his position with the franchise. If 2024 is his final season with the team, he wants to go out in style with a Super Bowl. And think about what he wants to do afterward.
