Ariana Grande once got banned for life from a donut shop after being really weird and licking a bunch of donuts.
Oh, for the heady days of 2015 when the world was a little less frazzled and we could all come together and enjoy the story of a pop star who got banned from a shop for licking their donuts.
While that sounds really weird it’s exactly what happened to musical megastar Ariana Grande, who once got banned from a California bakery after getting caught on camera licking their donuts without paying.
Security footage caught the moment the singer licked a couple of donuts that were out on display before saying ‘I hate America, I hate Americans’, for which she later apologised.
The bakery owner ended up banning her for life and tried to press charges against her, although she was never actually charged for anything relating to the incident.
He said that not even an apology from Grande would have caused him to change his mind, with BuzzFeed reporting that the video got him a visit from the health inspector and the bakery was downgraded, losing business as a result.
According to The Guardian, the whole donut incident, or ‘DonutGate’ if you will, was such a serious scandal that it cost Grande the chance of getting booked for a gig at the White House.
She was supposed to play for US president Barack Obama but amidst a bunch of emails released by WikiLeaks was the revelation that DonutGate had scuppered her chance.
Grande herself has since been able to joke about the incident, poking fun at what an utterly naff scandal she’d been caught in compared to some of her colleagues.
She said: “Stars end up doing dr.u.gs or in j.a.il, or p.r.eg.na.n.t or get caught licking a donut they didn’t pay for.
Clearly the slightly weird episode as a donut licker didn’t derail Grande’s career as she ended up being the joint ‘most liked’ celebrity of 2021 along with US president Joe Biden.
She got the accolade for having the most popular Instagram post of the year after posting pictures of her wedding to Dalton Gomez.
It didn’t manage to be the most popular Instagram post of all time, however, as that particular honour goes to a picture of an egg.
The world is a really weird place sometimes.
