He’s one of the world’s most famous musicians, but how much did fans really know about Michael Jackson? Here, PR to the stars Alan Edwards shares insight from his best-selling new book I Was There
Michael Jackson’s ‘extraordinary’ character has been revealed by the legendary author of a tell-all book about the stars.
PR guru Alan Edwards has opened up about his time with the King of Pop after decades of working with him, sister Janet and their famous family. Fans will be blown away by what the Bad singer got up to at the launch of his This Is It final concerts at London’s 02 Arena .
Speaking at the launch of his incredible new book, I Was There, Alan said: “He was the life and soul of the 02. He was having a laugh. At one point he got in a buggy, driving around shouting jokes at people, chucking a ball at some-one. He had such a laugh. So different from what people see.”
Recalling the historic day, he added: “The day of Michael’s launch, I was with Rob Hallett, a legendary promoter. Michael turned up, in the flesh he was bigger than you think, very firm handshake, and I don’t remember his voice being that high-pitched either.
Alan, who was David Bowie’s manager too, said: “The announcement was so exciting. I’d seen the rehearsals on a video link from the US and it looked fantastic. 50 Shows at the 02. I was lucky enough to work on Prince at the 02. He was a musical genius.
.Michael was not the only Jackson Alan has worked with. Speaking about the secret to success, he said: “I suppose there‘s no-one who has done it as long as me. Next year will be my 50th year. Janet Jackson, I’m privileged to have worked with her for 30 years, so I think maybe I’ve been a constant. I mean we all drop the old clanger, and we all make mistakes, but I think everybody would know that I work hard. I get told off by friends and family sometimes, ‘you know, you’re just living for this person’, but I particularly like underdogs and I’ll fight for them everyday.”
Meanwhile Alan has also shared David Bowie also had a string of kind acts he could have been proud of. The music mogul chatted to the Loose Women panel this Friday, June 7, as he promoted his new book I Was There: Dispatches from a Life in Rock and Roll, a memoir in which he recalls his biggest career moments.
Although some ITV viewers took to X to point they had “no idea” who Alan was his stellar list of clients includes names fans have definitely encountered in the past as he has worked for the likes of the Rolling Stones, the Spice Girls, Blondie, Prince, Britney Spears, Robbie Williams, David Beckham, Naomi Campbell and even Amy Winehouse.
But by cosying up to some of the world’s biggest stars, Alan was able to notice moments admirers had no way of knowing about as he told Kaye Adams all about his last moments with David Bowie.
Alan, the founder and CEO of public relations firm The Outside Organisation, recalled how he and the Starman hitmaker shared an outing before eventually parting ways.
“In the street, he gave me a hug”, Alan remembered, “and it was really nice but I didn’t realise how he really was.” The devastating news of David Bowie’s death, which took place on January 10 (two days after his 61st birthday) 2016, was shared a month after the pals last saw one another.
