One Piece has reigned supreme for more than two decades and it’s not surprising to see there are some memorable & favorite non-canon characters.

Split Images of Douglas bullet, Daddy Masterson, and Gild Tesero

For more than two decades, One Piece has been one of the most popular anime and manga series in the world. One Piece fans have met hundreds of characters over the course of the story, and the vast majority of these characters are part of the official canon. One Piece also has non-canon characters who typically appear in filler storylines. Many of these non-canon characters are forgettable, but some of them are quite memorable.

Several of One Piece‘s best non-canon characters are Marines or pirates, but there are also some who have no affiliation with either side. Some of these characters only appear in the anime, while others appear in movies. These non-canon One Piece characters tend to have history with notable canon characters, and for the most part, they are written well.

There are plenty of dangerous Marines in One Piece, but Jonathan is proof that not all high-ranking Marines are bad. He is the Vice-Admiral of the G-8 Marine Base, and he encounters the Straw Hats when they leave Skypiea. As a Vice-Admiral, Jonathan is supposed to have strong Haki, but he prefers to rely on his tactical skills instead.

He tried to capture the Straw Hats, but that was not his true goal. G-8 was on the verge of being decommissioned, so he used the incident to prove that the base was still important. Jonathan is an easy-going and good-natured person who cares about his men. If he were canon, Jonathan could help lead the Marines down a better path. He was once Fleet Admiral Akainu’s protégé, but he does not believe in Absolute Justice. It would be interesting to see how they would interact with each other, especially if it gives Akainu more depth.

Raoul appears in just one episode of the Loguetown Arc, but he helps to set up Luffy’s entire journey. Raoul owns the Gold Roger bar, and he met Gol D. Roger and his crew just as they were about to enter the Grand Line. He tried to warn Roger about the dangers of the Grand Line, but to his surprise, he was met with laughter.

Luffy walks into the bar and meets with a much older Raoul – who quickly notices similarities between him and Roger. He goes on to share a drink with Luffy, and talks about Roger’s exploits. Raoul was technically the first character to introduce Roger to the fans, and his assessment of Luffy sets up the story as a whole.

Billy is one of the many non-human characters who have appeared in One Piece. He was created by Dr. Indigo – the scientist of the Golden Lion Pirates. Billy has the ability to generate electricity from his feathers, and he can use that electricity to take out multiple low-level enemies at once. Fans who loved Karoo will love Billy too because they are both very loyal and courageous birds.

Shiki is the captain of the Golden Lion Pirates, but Billy fights him alongside Luffy. Shiki may be the villain of a non-canon movie, but he is part of the official One Piece canon. He was part of the Rocks Pirates, and he was one of Gol D. Roger’s biggest rivals. If Shiki and Karoo can be canon, than Billy and his fun personality should be too.

He was once a slave of the World Nobles, but he was freed during Fisher Tiger’s raid on Mary Geoise. Tesero now runs the largest entertainment city-ship in the world, and he has become one of the wealthiest people alive.

Tesero uses his wealth to influence pirates, the Marines, and the World Government, and he is a major player in the Underworld. He is a perfect example of greed, but he only turned out that way because of tragedy. If he were canon, he would be one of the most influential characters in the series. He would clash with Doflamingo and he could help fund the Revolutionary Army since he despises the World Nobles.

One Piece is known for its emotional and often times tragic backstories, and Stella is a huge part of Gild Tesero’s backstory. Stella was a slave as well, and Tesero fell in love with her. Stella was abused for many years, but she was able to hold onto happiness because of Tesero. He tried to buy her freedom, and he even stopped being a criminal because Stella disapproved of the lifestyle.

Unfortunately, Stella was sold to another World Noble before she could be set free. This Noble’s abuse proved to be too much, and she died in captivity. Stella was the key to Tesero’s heart, and without her, he fell into greed. If Tesero were canon, Stella would need to be too, but it would be better if she were still alive because it would give Tesero something to fight for.

Byrnndi wanted to destroy the world, and when he was finally arrested, he was imprisoned in Level 6 of Impel Down. He escaped during Blackbeard’s raid, and he went on to have an intense battle with Luffy during the two-year timeskip. Despite his age, Byrnndi is still a terrifying pirate, and given his strength, he should have also been welcomed into the Blackbeard Pirates.

Like Luffy, All-Hunt Grount is an ambitious teenager who wishes to become stronger. It should be noted that All-Hunt Grount was trained by Monkey D. Garp – the legendary Marine Vice-Admiral, and Luffy’s grandfather. If All-Hunt Grount were canon, he would have joined Garp on Pirate Island. He would also be forced to face Aokiji – who now serves Blackbeard as a Yonko Commander.

According to Smoker, he was once the best sniper that the Marines had. As soon as Masterson learned that Usopp is Yasopp’s son, he challenged the young Straw Hat to a duel.

Yasopp is the sniper of the Red Hair Pirates, and he was once Masterson’s greatest rival. They once dueled each other, and Yasopp spared his life when he learned Masterson had a daughter. Masterson is a cool character, and his addition to the series helped to provide an early look at Usopp and Yasopp’s relationship.

Zephyr was the main antagonist of One Piece Film: Z. He joined the Marines sixty years ago, and he rose to the rank of Admiral when Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard were in their primes. Zephyr earned the “Black Arm” epithet because of his mastery of Armament Haki. His family was killed by a pirate, which forced him to step down, but he continued to train multiple generations of Marines.

A few years later, he lost an arm and most of his crew during a separate pirate attack. When the World Government invited that second pirate to become a Warlord, Zephyr left the Marines and began planning the destruction of the New World, all the pirates in it, and the One Piece treasure. Zephyr is the only known Admiral from Roger’s time so he does fill a gap in the official canon. He also happens to be a good character with justifiable motivations.

Douglas Bullet may be the strongest movie villain that Luffy has ever fought. He was imprisoned in Impel Down for 20 years, but he escaped during Blackbeard’s raid. Douglas then orchestrated the Pirate Festival, which attracted many notable New World pirates. His plan was to kill all these pirates in order to become the next Pirate King.

Douglas was once part of the Roger Pirates, and he often challenged Roger, but he lost every time. He actually respected Roger, and wanted to be his heir, but he left the crew after one last failed challenge. With his immense Haki and Devil Fruit, he was able to overwhelm each member of the Worst Generation with ease. If Douglas were canon, he would be a real rival to Shanks, who is also trying to claim Roger’s legacy.
