Bandai Namco Entertainment has released its financial report for the fiscal year of 2024, which began on April 1, 2023, and ended on March 31, 2024. The newly released report reveals some surprising sales data for the company’s signature franchises, including both Dragon Ball and One Piece.

X user @/Schaewn shared the most significant sales data listed in the 2024 financial report, which is available publicly on Bandai Namco’s website. For the first time in the series’ history, One Piece reached the 100 billion yen mark at 112.1 billion yen (approximately US$721,893,733). Previously, One Piece achieved 86.3 billion in the 2023 full-year results, marking a 25.8 billion yen increase for 2024. However, Dragon Ball only achieved 140.6 billion in 2024, causing the series to lose its #1 spot after a six-year winning streak.

Despite the impressive sales increase of One Piece, it was the Mobile Suit Gundam series that reigned supreme with revenue of 145.7 billion yen. Of course, the bread and butter for Bandai Namco has always been the sales of Gunpla kits based on Gundam models from numerous anime TV series and movies. However, the age-old franchise was revitalized by the 2022 release of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and kept the momentum going with the successful theatrical release of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. While Gundam SEED Freedom is about to end its theatrical run in Japan, the North American screenings — with English subs and English dub available — recently began on May 7 (sub) and May 8 (dub).

Dragon Ball May See a Comeback With the Upcoming Release of Daima & Sparking Zero

Although Dragon Ball lost its financial dominance, its fall from grace isn’t as massive as fans may fear. In 2023, Dragon Ball generated 144.5 billion yen in revenue, meaning a 3.9 billion yen decline in 2024. However, even with this sales decline, Dragon Ball’s 140 billion yen is nothing to sneeze at. The series is also receiving a big push this year with the upcoming 40th-anniversary anime series Dragon Ball Daima, as well as the highly anticipated video game release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.

2024 is also a big year for the One Piece franchise. The anime TV series by Toei Animation will celebrate its 25th anniversary in August. Following the recent celebration of Monkey D. Luffy’s birthday in Japan, the North American Netflix series teased a famous character and storyline for the live-action One Piece Season 2. The One Piece manga is also preparing to leave its “Egghead” arc behind for a new adventure in the fall.
