Steve Harvey has never been one to hide his emotions. That’s something viewers of his self-titled daytime talk show know well. Back in January, producers gave Harvey a birthday surprise by reuniting him with a long lost friend, and that moment left the comedian-turned-actor-turned-host in tears — lots of tears.

On the May 6 episode of “Steve Harvey,” the waterworks return as the funnyman gets serious talking about his mom.

“You know, when they asked for me to do this, I said I’d take a shot at it,” Harvey says in a preview clip. “It’s a difficult thing for me.”

That’s obvious from the moment the segment begins. But with tears streaming, he does his best to honor the woman who died 16 years ago.

“OK. I can only hope that in everything that she’s taught me — somehow she’s somewhere watching me — I hope that I’ve made her proud of the man that I’ve turned out to be,” Harvey says.

Overcome with emotion, he then walks off stage.

hey welcome back everybody uh it’s been more than 15 years since my mom passed away uh but there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of uh some of the principles that she taught me elos ver Harve I adored her she taught me so many things one of the biggest lesson she taught me was about image my mother was a Sunday school teacher it was important for her that we dressed up to go to church and my mother was saved so she went to church all the time Monday night Tuesday night Wednesday night we ski

Thursday Friday we miss Saturday and Sunday both morning and night service that’s prayer meeting Bible study choir rehearsal Usher board meeting number one 2 3 4 and five I I really was considering going to hell at one point cuz I thought that it was just too much church but her image her concern with image was everything back then you got to dress up to go to church that was her thing it’s it’s been instilled in me I I dress up all the time I think about her when I’m TI [Applause] you know they uh they asked me to do

this I said I take a shot at it you know but uh it’s a difficult thing for me okay IO can only hope that in everything that she’s taught me know somehow she’s somewhere watching me I hope that I’ve made her uh proud of the man I’ve turned out to be uh having always been why I should have been in my life but uh I was trying and I look at my life and where it’s turned out I think about all of the moments of things she taught me about acts of kindness and how to treat people and do unto others that you would have them do unto you

and don’t do nothing to a woman that you want nobody do to your mom or your sister I remember her talking to me about respecting women and if you can ever grow up do something on behalf of women always honor them son cuz you’ll need him until the day you leave him I remember that I remember her lessons about faith she taught me to pray she taught me about the weapon of prayer how vital it is how important it is whether you believe that or not that don’t really matter to me it has worked for me every single time I’ve used it

so as I sit here on a set that’s mine and TV show and everything else I got it’s because OS ver Harvey taught me about the love of God and the respect of people I love my mom [Music]
