Amy Schneider opens up about Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament loss to worthy competitor

Beloved Jeopardy! star Amy Schneider opened up about her major loss on Monday night, following her appearance at the game show’s Invitational Tournament

Amy Schneider’s best wasn’t enough during her latest appearance in the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament although she was a history-making contestant on the game show.

The software engineer competed against five-time winner Luigi de Guzman, an attorney from Virginia, and 2019 Teen Tournament winner Avi Gupta, now a law student, on Monday. Amy made a name for herself on Jeopardy! when she scored a 40-game victory streak—it ended in January 2022.

She came in fourth place for Jeopardy! Masters last year, but she didn’t have the same luck during the first round on Monday. Amy got back on track during Double Jeopardy!, correctly answering the battle of Thermopylae as the 480 B.C. battle, in which the forces of Leonidas and Xerxes went head-to-head.

This answer took her up to $12,200, moving her to the leafing spot. At the end of the round, Luigi pushed past her, nearly doubling the amount of his opponents. Luigi finished that round with $23,600, while Amy fell behind with $14,200 and Avi had $11,600.

During Final Jeopardy!, each contestant answered the last question wrong, failing to identify F. Scott Fitzgerald as the writer who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917 and was “sent to Camp Sheridan in Montgomery, where he met the woman who became his wife.”

Amy ended up losing his $10,000 wager, taking her score to $4,200. Luigi only wagered $4,801, winning the game with a final score of $18,799. Avi came in second place with $4,367.

Although Amy took a major loss, she doesn’t seem to be upset that Luigi won.

“Nothing I can do but tip my cap to @ouij on that one,” Amy tweeted after the broadcast on Monday night, “I mean, come on, he successfully buzzed in on 31/60 clues! Just sheer dominance.”

Luigi also went on social media after the episode, praising Amy for being “one of the greatest ever to play the game,” on Reddit. He also shared that a health issue almost stopped him from competing in the game.

“When I first got the call to come back for the JIT, I scheduled a regular eye exam. Good thing I did: the exam showed swelling & fresh bleeding on the retina of my right eye,” he wrote, “Vision out of that eye is now distorted, with a blind spot more or less it the top-center of my field of view.”
