speaking of Glamor magazine actress Katie Holmes offered some rare insight into her daughter Surrey Cruz rare because she never speaks about the daughter of Tom Cruise making many of us speculate well I wanted to go down this Rabbit Hole did Tom abandon Surrey let’s break it down [Applause] welcome to popcorn Planet I am Andy signor yes this is a fascinating relationship everybody remembers Tom Katie and Suri he was jumping on couches about this love affair and they were very public as was their daughter Suri

who they did put out into the spotlight and now Katie Holmes is speaking out for a very rare time about her daughter in this uh interview she did for glamor magazine now it’s a quick little part we’re going to break down on what she said and how she’s trying to protect her daughter but it opened up a whole Wormhole for me where I went down to try to find what do we actually know about this relationship did Tom Cruise abandon Katie did you know do you remember Tom Cruise sued magazines who made that claim whatever happened to that we got a

lot to break down before we get there let’s talk about what Katie said to glamor magazine so the portion about Siri here they asked her uh does her 16 year old daughter wear things that feel reminiscent of what she wore when she was younger it was kind of a smart way for the reporter to try and get in there uh Katie said I think the 90s style is exactly back uh makes me feel old we lived through that already my mom says she should have saved things I should have saved things speaking of you’re a mom to a teenage girl are there any

words to accurately describe that she’s going for it she’s trying to get some Surrey comments she doesn’t usually talk about it and and Katie did reveal what’s been really important for me with my daughter because she was so visible at a young age is I I really like to protect her I’m very grateful to be a parent to be her parent she’s an incredible person interviewer asked I was listening to her cover of Blue Moon which played during the opening credits of the last movie you directed alone together it’s really

good she also sings on rare objects how did that come about yeah I hope uh she always does something on my films I always ask her but both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry which is you have these projects you become a family with people and it’s this safe beautiful creative space so it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly that’s how I like to work I like to have that kind of feeling it was very meaningful to me to have her there because she is my heart now again

that’s it we don’t get much there was another piece recently where she talked about the fact that they asked her has she has Surrey seen Dawson’s Creek and she did reveal yeah she’s seen Dawson’s Creek it’s probably weird since she’s a teenager um it’s not like you need to watch mommy’s work but during the pandemic we had a good laugh about it it’s wild to have a daughter who’s almost the same age I was when I began all this uh but that’s it we don’t usually get a lot of quotes from Katie about Surrey and it made me wonder why

what was actually going on and how did she get seemingly Soul custody of Surrey Cruz well let’s break this down because it’s a fascinating story and I didn’t know all the details here so let’s get to it you obviously remember this they were everywhere they were all about it like I said jumping on couches Etc People magazine broke this down way back in 2012 how she took control the secrets from the split she was increasingly unhappy with her five-year marriage to Tom Cruise allegedly and she realized she no longer had the life she wanted in

terms of her career her way of life everything so she quickly took action once she decided to go she was done says the source with the help of her unflinching attorney father Martin that’s right her uh her dad is a lawyer in Toledo Ohio and uh together they worked to make sure this happened they kept uh Tom in the dark until a bombshell phone call broke the news to him she knew she had to have everything locked down before she pulled the trigger because there could be no wiggle room if she wanted to uh just to turn if

she didn’t want this to turn to a long drawn-out battle uh so I try to get that magazine article but Yahoo had a good better the best breakdown I could find of it but yeah it sounds like a Hollywood Thriller it really does she surprised Tom during a phone call while he was thousands of miles away in Iceland shooting that film Oblivion uh on June 29th she then managed to wrestle away custody of Surrey who was six at the time just 11 days Days Later guys 11 days later the settlement was done she had full custody of Surrey how on Earth

did that happen well let’s break it down uh she went about using a disposable cell phone according to LA Times Brenda Holmes provided her with a throwaway device she could take talk to her New York based lawyers without Cruz or his people knowing anything she was up to another report by People magazine says that uh keems caught her she caught her husband five years off guard by meticulously plotting her divorce uh ahead of time even reaching out to her parents for help Tom was about to start shooting an action-packed scene on the set of

Iceland when he answered an unexpected call he was about to do a stunt got off his motorcycle to take the call it was during that conversation that Holmes broke the news he’s been in shock since that day the source adds now again allegedly Los Angeles Times also reports that when uh they settled the divorce she had already had three law firms in three different states set up just in case she’d have to battle her soon to be ex outside of Manhattan where she filed Mission Impossible star initially wanted to Hash it out into California which

typically favors divorcing parents to have joint custody uh but she wanted sole custody of Surrey and it turns out one of the toughest attorneys homes on her side was her father his way or the highway uh they say about Martin Holmes a top divorce lawyer in Toledo who helped lay out the strategy for the split so she was going in he’ll look at a storm in the I make sure he’s standing when it’s over so she knew she had it prepped her own father was there prepping with her behind the scenes getting this whole thing to happen she

he arrived in New York the mom arrived in New York unclear whether Cruz knew they were in New York but they were there as this was all happening apparently um and uh they made this plan as part of the settlement Combs will have total control over surrey’s education uh which is a slap to his face which uh who renounced Catholic upbringing for Scientology and she registered Surrey as a parish for the church of Saint Francis not far from her apartment that means she’ll be taking Surrey along with her mass and everyone there is thrilled to

have Katie join said a member of the church’s choir um so that that you know big stuff so what was really interesting is I broke this down further obviously aside from learning that yeah her father and the whole family was involved to secretly make this plan what was really interesting is as this all happened reports started coming out even then this was 2013.

 Tom I never abandoned Surrey where extremely close he says in a lawsuit that he filed against life and style and In Touch magazine he filed a 50 million dollar defamation lawsuit against Bower publishing uh which he doesn’t usually do but he was Fed Up of this idea and he said I have no way I have in no way cut Siri out of my life whether physically emotionally financially or otherwise uh and uh he sued him he was really upset by it uh while I’m sure my daughter misses me when I’m not with her as I miss her she is a very happy child and we have a

wonderful relationship and cheerful phone calls and I think that’s important because honestly this is the only thing we’re going to get on the record from Tom and I want you to keep that in mind because yeah I know a lot of us it’s easy to assume he’s being you know abandoning her but that could mean a lot of things he may not be close but you gotta realize now Katie Holmes just stripped her from him stripped her from him I want Soul custody I want all says that’s gotta hurt It’s gotta hurt you’re in this relationship you think you’re in love

Katie’s become a Scientologist she’s apparently unhappy not telling him say what you want about Tom and Scientology and everything else it I do believe that was a shock to his core and uh if anything it makes me like you know what good on him for letting her take the lead okay he did let her go he did let Katie have it that’s a big thing to do he could have drawn that out and he could have spent all the money he could have fought for joint custody and had Surrey be pulled along in the way but there’s a part of the story that I do

think Tom might have been really doing the right thing he just it’s hard to be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t want you there who is not giving you that much time and then you gotta only do phone calls which who’s to say he’s not doing we’re not there in those rooms only person he’s going to tell us that someday if they choose to is Surrey herself and in the meanwhile I think we got to be careful of what does this mean now there are some things that were revealed during that lawsuit which I didn’t know about until I researched for

this piece he did admit this is not speculation anymore Tom Cruise admitted that she divorced him to protect him from scientologies now I always thought that was just speculative we all just assumed it but during the deposition in that case for the 50 million uh he responded to a question when asked did Holmes leave you in part to protect Surrey from Scientology he was angry at first there’s no need to protect my daughter from My Religion they push the question further uh and then did you know did she leave because she wanted to

protect her daughter from Scientology Cruz responded did they did she say that that’s one of the assertions yes so he did admit one of the reasons she wanted out was because she wanted to protect him from Scientology what’s more Cruz also admitted that uh the seven-year-old is no longer a member of Scientology huge admission since anyone who leaves the faith is considered a suppressive person and is cut off from all members of the church we’ve learned this from scientologists who’ve left they tell you to abandon anybody in your family who

isn’t supporting the religion it that’s why we don’t like Scientology it’s very cult-like and I don’t care no religion should force you to leave your family members you should be allowed to be like well yeah we agree to disagree thank you for supporting my religion any religion that’s telling you to disown your family because they aren’t supporting you is something you probably need to look into you’re probably in a cult I’m just gonna warn you uh and that’s the problem with Tom Cruise like he’s an occult I believe

I don’t know how maliciously his intentions are with it but he’s been brainwashed by this cult who I think treats him like a God and we’ve talked to scientologists who’ve sort of been there and that’s what it seems like and it’s frustrating because I like Tom Cruise as an actor I wrote for him as a movie star but it’s getting harder and harder to support him knowing what his religion has done to people and all these accusations that he he denies and he just ignores and is clearly a big part of so you gotta know that’s what

happens so he not only admitted yeah that was why she left but also admitted that Surrey is no longer a practicing member of Scientology um and that’s uh that’s a big Revelation they asked Cruz if both he and his church now consider a suppressive person after leaving his church uh this is a distortion and supplication of the matter I don’t want to just give an oversimplication of religious Doctrine uh he did it however he did agree that the definition of a suppressive person listed on the church’s website was an

accurate one so interesting right this is interesting now we’ve speculated that before but from these depositions which feel like got pushed down I never saw this back then I guess I just wasn’t paying attention I was doing other stuff but that is an interesting Revelation including the fact um that uh yeah they so they were trying to demand all this relationship about it uh and and what ended up happening was uh he uh sorry wait before I get to the reveal of what happened they stood by the story they they filed back this was

a big case back and forth and they wanted me information about Cruz’s membership and Scientology all this stuff all this stuff started coming out during this lawsuit so what ended up happening Tom Cruise dropped a lawsuit well they settled the lawsuit they did sell a lawsuit and what was interesting about this is they did make a comment Bauer uh publishing did say Tom Cruise’s lawsuit against Power publishing has been settled the terms of the settlement were not disclosed and remained confidential Bauer publishing as well as in touch and

life and style magazine never intended to communicate that Tom Cruise had cut off all ties and abandoned his daughter Suri and regret if anyone drew that inference from anything that they published so you gotta look at that quote again they we never intended to communicate that Tom Cruise had cut off all ties and abandoned that’s that’s the thing that I guess Tom and everybody wanted to say like because the reality is Tom’s paying a lot in child support and I can only assume he’s calling in once in a while or maybe he’s not

allowed to talk about it during his relent maybe there’s a secret thing here happening because Scientology can’t know Katie Holmes probably can’t fight it because I’m sure she’s signed some sort of documents and things that you know she’s not allowed to talk about I can’t imagine that settlement wasn’t done without her agreeing to certain terms to not to fame or talk about you know ndas Etc and in fact that has come out as well in that um uh where I have it here there was a revelation that Leah Remini can’t see

Katie Holmes because if Katie Holmes is seen with her it would seem like a public knock on Scientology given that Leah is such a big anti-scientology person Leah’s discussed this I can’t see her because she’ll lose custody of Surrey that’s that’s what the pressure is and that’s why it seems like Katie doesn’t talk now has Tom Cruise seen Surrey reports that US magazines say that you know she he could see her 10 days a month but he hasn’t seen her in years does that mean he’s not supporting not calling who knows does that mean

Katie wants him there that’s something none of these reports ever really say and you got to think as a father if you have your mother and the daughter have now just gone off on their own and left you they don’t believe in your religion they just turned and were like we’re out and then I want Soul custody I don’t want you to be you know you can visit you can visit your kid it’s a hard thing to digest it is and it takes a lot to be like well I don’t want to interrupt what am I gonna do maybe he is there in the limited parts he’s allowed to maybe it’s

hard for him to be there maybe he’s trying to let her have that so you know she can be the mom and he’s taken something not be there there’s a lot more to unpack and this is what the reality is as is the fact that yeah it wasn’t cheap he’s and she didn’t she could have gotten more apparently um the reports here say that her child support is 33 333 a month so that’s four hundred thousand a year which given you know Tom’s alleged 250 million dollar Fortune Surrey will net out 4.

8 million when this is all said and done and uh you know Katie’s got her own money coming in I’m sure doing stuff too she’s not getting spousal support this wasn’t about money this was about uh getting out that’s really what it was Tom’s got to pay obviously surrey’s medical expenses Etc uh and but they both agreed that Siri will not attend a residential school meaning boarding school meaning Scientology School she could have gotten more support if she went to trial but she decided to settle quickly and I can only imagine that settlement was done by

look we don’t care about the money we won’t disparage you we want this clean we’ve already prepped this is going to be a battle that you could lose we are going to divulge things what do you want to do I want Siri you can visit her we’re out of here and it seems like he’ll he said fine he let it go yeah that’s uh that’s a that’s a big deal it’s a big deal you got to remember so uh yeah here’s the part about Leah Remini author notes that it’s like she was likely advised to not keep in touch with Leah Remini I’m sure her father is a

smart attorney has probably told her to hit that hanging out with Leah would be considered considered disparaging the church in the eyes of Tom and the church we’re all hoping that eventually Katie would say more and that we’d see them together but Leah has gone on to become a real lightning rod and exposing Scientology and I think Katie just wants to keep the life she has now with Surrey and not get into a big fight with the church she said we used to be big friends and she could not be seen in the meal with her because she could lose

custody of Surrey um it’s quite sick really so you know the reality is here as we see this surrey’s now 16 coming upon 18 couple years at that point she’s an adult the custody payments stop I imagine the deals then what what can she do at that point what can Tom Cruise do at that point there’s a lot of just speculation that Tom’s getting worried it seems like he didn’t show up to the Oscars he’s afraid of people calling it out yeah is there a reckoning coming for Tom will that happen that’s going to be our next

story stay tuned for that as we break that down but what do you think of all this look I I don’t like deadbeat dads I don’t you gotta be a part of your kid’s life and if he’s really not ever speaking to her and he’s just cut off all communication and just throwing payments out and never interacting with Surrey well then Tom that’s shitty sorry it is now but is that happening no I got no proof of that I’m not in their relationship I don’t know how it is there’s so much could be a lot more Nuance to this and uh I know I don’t

know maybe they do have private conversations maybe Scientology is not allowed to know who knows what’s happening behind the scenes until we hear it directly from Suri I think it’s unfair for us to criticize anybody in this because I see no proof of it and in fact he did win a lawsuit where the magazine had to did correct and said he did not abandon his daughter so to answer the question in the thumbnail in the title I don’t think he did could he be more present publicly sure but do we see Syria and Katie that much
